Ratatan Beginner Guide: Commands & First Upgrades

At a glance

Learn Fall In, Attack, Jump and Guard before chasing a build. Choose a leader whose starting Cobun suit you, then use Ratatan Dock and Support Desk upgrades to address the reason your last adventure ended.

The five commands to learn first

These are the Default controller prompts in v1.1.9. A dash means leave that beat empty. Follow your own Help screen for keyboard bindings or Advanced controls.

Action Input What it does
Fall In □ · □ · □ Gather your Cobun around your leader.
Jump □ · — · □ Jump over suitable ground attacks.
Attack ○ · ○ · ○ Order your Cobun to attack.
Guard ○ · — · ○ Reduce incoming damage.
Hustle Tech 1 △ · △ · △ Use the unit’s equipped first Hustle Tech; check its MP requirement.

Watch the bottom timing bar and the Good / Just feedback. If your inputs consistently land early or late, open Options → Audio → Calibration. Keep the same audio device connected while adjusting and checking the result.

Pick a leader for your immediate problem

  • Kamonelo: successful Fall In commands restore 5% HP to Cobun at passive level 1.
  • Harigittan: an extra 15% damage reduction while guarding at passive level 1.
  • Mashuma: an accessible start for an ailment build, with Soldier / Ninja starting classes.

See the eight-character roster and leader selection guide for other playstyles.

Spend your first upgrades deliberately

  1. Return to Rataport and inspect the Ratatan Dock and Support Desk.
  2. At the Dock, choose between a unit’s two upgrade branches according to whether you need survival or damage.
  3. Compare the next upgrade’s cost before buying: higher levels cost more. Dock choices can be reset freely.
  4. Equip useful weapons you already own before committing materials to a replacement.

For solo play, Welcome Mode can be switched on without changing the story. It is disabled in co-op.

After the first clear

Set an Oath Level of at least 1 in Goddess Games to continue into Episode 2. Increase the Oath level again for later chapters. An Episode is a chapter of progression; a World number is not the same thing.

If Episode 3 remains locked despite a seemingly complete gate, use the Episode 3 troubleshooting guide.
